1993 Super Mario Bros. Film to Get 4K 30th Anniversary Screening in Japan

The original Super Mario film celebrates its milestone birthday in September

This September, audiences in Japan will be treated to a 4K theatrical re-release of the film based on the iconic Nintendo series Super Mario Bros.

No, not that one.

September 15 marks the 30th anniversary of the Japanese release of 1993's Super Mario Bros., starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the plumber siblings. Released in Japan as Super Mario: Goddess of the Demon Empire, the film has developed a cult following over the last three decades, both at home and abroad.

The film also stars Samantha Mathis as Princess Daisy and Dennis Hopper as President Koopa. Rather than exploring the Mushroom Kingdom, the Mario Bros. (Mario Mario and Luigi Mario) find themselves in Dinohattan: a city in a parallel universe that diverged from our own 65 million years ago and is now populated by the humanoid descendants of dinosaurs.

The film inspired a highly-condensed manga adaptation in Shogakukan’s Monthly Corocoro Comic Summer Holiday Special. And while the movie was almost universally panned by critics, audiences and the cast themselves, it still has a loyal (and not completely ironic) fanbase.

The print shown in Japanese theaters will be a newly completed 4K restoration. Fans in Japan can look forward to the theatrical event starting September 15.
